Latvian International Festival Directors Discussion
(11.06.1999.)

Do the organisers of international festivals in Latvia need a formal or informal association to strengthen the common position, to verify and to show how effectively the festivals can popularise the image of Latvia in the world and show the Latvian art on international level? Do we need to start a dialogue with the state and to defend our position? Which would be the best way? Are mutual consultations, co-operation, exchange of information and co-ordination between the festivals possible in Latvia? Do we need a common publication? Festivals in Latvia perfectly show the model how it is possible to work effectively in the present situation - developing our own target audience, involving sponsors, creating a successful management model. For the moment the festivals in Latvia are either ignored by the state or compared to private events. Often they are included in the reports of the Ministry of Culture but almost never they get some support. The Ministry of Culture hasn't got a far-sighted strategic cultural policy or it is chaotic, spontaneous, and intuitive.

Co-operating the festivals could further the change of cultural policy attitude and improve the prestige in states level.
