Programme During the intense week various events took place:
Consequently all the participants and spectators of the festival had a choice. The freedom to choose was one of the main principles forming the festival programme. Also guests and journalists noticed this principle: "Comedy, psychological drama, tragedy, intellectual drama, staging, existential drama, poetical theatre, contemporary opera, modern dance, mono-performance… performing arts were presented in their variety. I was really pleased having difficulties to choose. It can be supposed as a concept of the festival programming: to give freedom to a spectator to collect his own programme, to create his own reflection of the world in the theatre. The final conclusions will be the summary of impressions, different for each spectator." (The Necessity of the Necessary. N. Naumanis daily "Diena" , October 30, 1997) Important goal of the festival was to let the younger generation of Latvian theatre directors compare themselves in the context of foreign theatre. Diverse performances of the festival (diverse in genre, geography, quality, generation) offered an opportunity for Latvian directors to apply different criteria of evaluation and to change the context. The principal goal of the festival was to present Latvian theatre in front of international audience, to put the name of the country in European theatrical map and to begin regional and international cooperation and networking. The amount (43 from 13 countries) of foreign guests and the variety of their professional background – festival directors, theatre scholars, producers, directors etc. serves as a formal evidence of the success fulfilling this goal. "It is an significant event in the slow and dull cultural life of Latvia as the festival offers an opportunity to see what new has happened in neighboring theatre; to discuss these new tendencies with the colleagues from other countries. We could notice unusual theatre audience during the festival: students, artists, musicians and philosophers. All the mentioned does not form the traditional Latvian theatre audience. But they can be a potential audience." (Homo Novus P.S. nr.1 by M.Zieda, Literature. Art. US 30.10.-6.11.1997.) "There is no doubt such a festival is necessity also in the future. It is informal and naturally reflects the process instead of self-sufficient representation." (The Necessity of the Necessary. N.Naumanis Diena (The Day), October 30, 1997) to
